Iterative optimization of ideal material distribution

Concrete is known for its strength and ability to take any shape of formwork. This formwork, however, can be very costly in construction. 3D printed sandstone, on the other hand, can be printed in any shape but it is very brittle. This project combines the best of both worlds by printing an only 5mm thin formwork for fiber reinforced concrete. The intricate branching structure calculated through topology optimization distributes the equivalent of only a few centimeters of concrete.
